So I woke up this morning and found that Marco Arment’s secret “new app” is a podcast client.
I like some iOS podcast apps, but I don’t love any of them. So I’m making my own. It’ll be released when it’s ready. Maybe later this year.
I actually had the same thought about a year ago and built the beginnings of one. Before Instacast released a desktop version that was. The extra features I had in mind did not outweigh the utility of a desktop client for me. So Instacast turned into my client of choice. In order for me to want to use my own client in favor of Instacast I would have to create an OSX version too. Instacast still isn’t perfect … but I wouldn’t be able to build an iPad, and iPhone, and an OSX version that was better enough to make we want to forgo the convenience of the client on all the client platforms I use.
So my podcast app will probably never see the light of day but I don’t think it was a waste of time. I learned a great deal about how to implement delegates and notifications well which can benefit any app I write.
In any case I am very curious to see how Overcast works out.
